In order for two people to cooperate one has to dominate while the other submits. The science fiction novel The Female Man by Joanna Russ states to its reader the all the ways men dominate women. In addition to that it articulates how there is a war going on between women and men. As well, the novel gives its readers hints on how man cause women to fight amongst each other. The movie The Step Ford Wives directed by Frank Oz likewise The Female Man is also about men dominating women and it too gives direct hints on how men cause women to fight amongst themselves. The movie, The Step Ford Wives and the novel The Female Man are both works of fiction however this problem can be seen in real life as observed through the article ?Afghan women still feeling pressured to wear burqas? written by a CBC news reporter. In an attempt to create a utopia the dominant gender produces a dystopia for the opposite gender not only because it dominates them but also because it cause the dominated gender to fight amongst them.
Gender domination is a common characteristic of the society. Men dominate women for everything even something as insignificant as artier which is shown through all three sources. In the novel, Joanna Russ illustrates the different ways man dominate women. One way a man controls a woman is by her clothing. The Female Man shows how women are commanded in a way to ?dress for The Man? (Russ 29).The men in the novel make the world a dystopia for women in an attempt to make the world a utopia for themselves. Frank Oz also exhibits the same male ascendancy on women through his movie. The ascendancy is shown, when Walter and Joanna have an argument about Sarah having a seizure. Walter gets his way by saying she ?was fired? (Oz 28:56) and that her ?kids barely know [her]? (Oz28:57) at the end he finally says ?[their] marriage is falling apart? (Oz 29). When she does not submit to him he says ?it makes people try to kill her? (Oz 29:52), this indirectly shows how men threaten women to kill them or in this case turn them into robots if they do not listen to them. After when Joanna submits to Walter, he make her change her clothes by saying, ?first of all we are in the country now so no more black only high powered erotic castrating Manhattan bitches wear black?(Oz 32) as an effort to make the world a utopia for themselves. Similarly the men in the movie end up making a dystopia for the women. The Step Ford Wives and The Female Man are both works on fiction but fiction is not far from the truth, as one can see the same thing happening in the real world through articles. The article ?Afghan women still feeling pressured to wear burqas? shows how the ?Taliban [repress] women in Afghanistan? (Afghan women still feeling pressured to wear burqas 1).The Taliban is a dominant male group in Afghanistan that controls all of the countries activities including what women wear. The Taliban claims it is created to bring peace to the world creating a utopia for people. The Afghanistan women wear burqas as it ?[preserves] the modesty of Muslim women? (Afghan women still feeling pressured to wear burqas 1). The women in Afghanistan think otherwise as they find ?[it] difficult to see and difficult to walk? (Afghan women still feeling pressured to wear burqas 2) because of it. Women there ?have to always look down? (Afghan women still feeling pressured to wear burqas 2) as it is considered inappropriate. Yet they wear them because ?a woman?s failure to wear the burqa over the face in public places could result in a beating? (Afghan women still feeling pressured to wear burqas 1). The men in this country designed a piece of clothing so women are basically left helpless in the name of creating a better world for themselves. A country where women do not have the choice to wear what they want, where they struggle to walk, a place that does not let its women look up with pride is a dystopia and not a utopia like the men claim to be making. If a group of people have no rights they are
