The Science behind Diet Soda
Diet soda is a multi-million dollar industry, and sales are only going to increase, according to Renee M. Covino, who holds a BA in Marketing and Journalism from Lehigh During 2003-08, Mintel [a leading research company] estimates the regular soda segment lost 15.6 million consumers age 18 and over, and the diet soda segment only added half as many, or 7.8 million adult consumers (qtd. in Covino). The diet soda industry added 7.8 million adult consumers, that?s a lot of people buying and drinking diet soda. Originating humbly, Hyman Kirsch, a Russian immigrant from Simferopol created a sugar free beverage in 1952, not as a weight loss tool, but as a drink for diabetics of course once people who watched their weight started pushing a new, healthy choice of carbonated beverage towards health conscious women, fast forward half a century and diet soda is gaining 7.8 million consumers (Covino).
A typical diet soda ingredients label is a nefarious list of; carbonated water, aspartame, phosphoric acid, potassium benzoate, citric acid, and caffeine. Some ingredients, such as carbonated water seem straight forward how can bubbly water go wrong? But aspartame and phosphoric acid are less obvious. Kim Barnouin holds a Master?s of Science in holistic nutrition and Rory Freeman write: Aspartame has been blamed for arthritis, birth defects, fibromyalgia, Alzheimer?s, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and diabetes. When methyl alcohol, a component of aspartame, enters your body, it turns into formaldehyde (Barnouin and Freedman 14). Diet soda is also carcinogenic. To clarify the term, carcinogenic: cancer-causing. When a person drinks diet soda, that person is putting himself or herself at risk to develop cancer. Stop drinking diet soda. Nothing in diet soda that should be in your body, it?s not guilt free, it?s not even remotely healthy.
We live in America and our tax dollars fund the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) who protect us Americans from dangerous substances, life-threatening substances. Diet Soda has a key ingredient, which recently gained 7.8 million adult consumers, is carcinogenic, because diet soda isn?t illegal, and the FDA hasn?t banned diet soda from American markets. The Environmental Working Group (EWG), FDA tested 24 samples of diet soda for benzene 79 percent were contaminated with benzene above the federal tap water standard, the average benzene level was, 19 ppb, instead of 5 ppb (Brackett). Benzene is contained in diet soda, a lot of benzene is in diet soda, and even the FDA has limits on benzene levels in our water. There is no question that benzene is unhealthy, the World Health Organization (WHO) tells us that ?benzene is carcinogenic to humans along with no safe level of exposure can be recommended" (qtd. in Nowell). The FDA tells us that diet soda has levels of benzene unsafe for human consumption, the WHO agrees and goes a step farther, saying there is no safe level of benzene for human consumption, even a low level.
The 7.8 million diet soda consumers aren?t idiots, they know that there is no sugar in diet soda, which must be good for human health; after all, obesity is becoming a serious problem in America. Regular soda and juice are both high in sugar, but not diet soda. In fact, diet soda, which is sugarless, has a special, little miracle that makes it taste sweet: artificial sweetener. It could be perfect, no weight gain, no added fat, nothing that contributes to the nasty cellulite that plagues self-esteem, the only problem is the pesky human body. The only problem to this artificial sweeter is better explained from a study done by Purdue University in Behavioral Neuroscience:
We found that reducing the correlation between sweet taste and the caloric content of foods using artificial sweeteners in rats resulted in increased caloric intake, increased body weight, and increased adiposity, as well as diminished caloric compensation and blunted thermic responses to sweet-tasting diets. These results suggest that consumption of products containing artificial sweeteners may lead to increased body weight and obesity by interfering with fundamental homeostatic, physiological processes.(Switchers and Davison)
So the FDA and the WHO agree that diet soda is not just unhealthy, but it?s actually so unhealthy that it could be classified as life- threatening, as there is a general consensus that cancer causes death. Diet soda actually contributes to weight gain, and yet over 7.8 million people are happily slurping this
