Ethnic Groups and Discrimination
Mexican immigrants in the United States suffer from a society affected by xenophobia (fear of strangers or of immigrants who possess traits and characteristics that some consider foreign to a nation’s culture, language and heritage). Many xenophobes engage in all types of hideous, cruel, or discriminatory activities to keep targeted groups from becoming part of society. These Mexican immigrants have and are being stereotyped. They face prejudice, racism, and segregation. Being segregated is not done intentional or pushed by society. For the most part segregation happens by these immigrants coming across the border and meeting up with spouses, family members, or friends that are already established here. Most do not speak English and are unskilled in the job that someone has already established for them before they came to America. They rely on the friend or family member to tell them what to do and how to do it. To be their translator so-to-speak. There is a detention center in Taylor; Texas (near Austin) called the Hutto facility. Immigrant children are incarcerated in prisons such as the Hutto facility just because they were traveling with their parents. Children are being snatched away and separated from their parents.
