Similarities in Fireside Poetry
    “Thanatopsis”, written by William Cullen Bryant, and “The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls”, written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow are both uplifting poems about nature and life repeating and creating a cycle. Although they are two poems of their own, they both give a reassuring feeling of happiness for repetition. In both “Thanatopsis” and “The Tide Rises,” the subject, the structure and the use of imagery are very much alike.
    “Thanatopsis” and “The Tide Rises” share a similar subject of an endless cycle. “Thanatopsis” discusses the repeating, endless cycle of life. “As long as the train of ages glides away, the sons of men, the youth in life’s green spring, and he who goes in the full strength of years, matron and maid, The speechless babe, and the gray-headed man -- Shall one by one be gathered to thy side by those who in their turn shall follow them.”(Bryant, line 66-71). This line from “Thanatopsis” demonstrates the never ending cycle of life, death, and rebirth repeating itself. Where “Thanatopsis” is a never ending cycle of life, “The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls” Is a never ending cycle of nature. “ The morning breaks; the steeds in their stalls stamp and neigh, as the hostler calls; The day returns but nevermore returns the traveler to the shore, and the tide rises, the tide falls.”(Longfellow, Line 11-15).
