This paragraph is an analysis of an Album Quilt by Licinda Ward Honctain. A quilt or patchwork is a form of a needlework that involves sewing together pieces of fabric into the large design. Usually it has a layer of batting filling inside, layer of fabric for backing, and a quilt top.

The Pictorial Album Quilt was completed in 1867. The album has 40 unique highly decorative pictorial quilt blocks made by hand in the appliqué technique. (An appliqué is a smaller ornament applied to another surface.) Each block, seven by six inches, represents a different design. This quilt has six horizontal and vertical rows and every square block framed in red color fabric 1.5 inches wide. The main rectangular block, taking up the size of the three squares, set slightly to the left; which, gives a more dynamic feel to the composition. All colorful appliqué blocks lay on a white color background. In some blocks the artist composed typical elaborate floral, animal, leaf, basket, heart, patriotic, and decorative motifs. She also combined family biography and political commentary.

Lucinda Ward Honstain was born in Westchester County, N.Y., on July 24, 1820. When she was about 5 her family moved to lower Manhattan where she lived until her death in 1904.
